ACIMIT takes delegation to Ethiopia

Italian textile machinery association ACIMIT will send a delegation to Ethiopia at the start of July, with funding from the Italian Trade Promotion Agency. The association said in the build-up to the mission that its intention is to strengthen contacts between Italy’s textile machinery manufacturers and Ethiopia’s textile and garments companies.

Between 2004 and 2010, Ethiopia recorded a GDP growth rate of 11%, ranking among the world’s fastest growing economies, ACIMIT said. In 2012, GDP growth came in at 7%, and is expected to remain at this level for the coming years.

The African country’s textile and garments industry is of great importance as it employs 20% of the nation’s entire workforce, and the Ethiopian government has created a variety of support programmes to promote the industry. Demand for machinery among local textile manufacturers has grown significantly.

Over the past five years, machinery imports to Ethiopia have increased on average by 13% annually. In particular, Italian exports, especially of spinning and finishing machinery, rose by 7% annually between 2008 and 2012.

“Ethiopia is a country with great prospects and is willing to invest in order to allow its textile sector to continue to grow,” said Raffaella Carabelli, ACIMIT president in the days leading up to the trip. “The goal of this mission is not just to present what our sector has to offer, but to develop a dialogue with the local authorities for a programme of long-term cooperation.”

Eight machine manufacturers, Bianco, Corino, Fadis, Marzoli, Mesdan, Reggiani, Savio and Stalam, will form part of the Italian delegation.
