Nepalese outdoor brand celebrates tenth anniversary

Outdoor brand Sherpa Adventure Gear, founded in 2003 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the first successful attempt on the summit of Everest, is now celebrating its own tenth anniversary. Founder, Tashi Sherpa, set the brand up partly to honour an uncle who was part of the successful 1953 expedition.

But Tashi Sherpa also wanted to honour the Himalayan peoples of today by making high-end outdoor apparel in Nepal.

Products in Sherpa Adventure Gear’s latest collection include Baato pants and shorts, which the company says will work well for trek and travel. The trousers combine durable and stretch nylons in a hybrid design that gives them stretch for comfort, high durability and easy-care qualities, including a fast drying speed and non-wrinkle appearance.

Superlight Mechi baselayer tops also form part of the new collection. The brand describes these as easy-layering, quick-drying and efficient at resisting odour, even on expeditions and long adventures. They come in 100% polyester, in what Sherpa Adventure Gear calls a silk-weight jersey-knit structure. Polygiene’s silver-based antimicrobial technology provides the tops with their odour-resistant functionality.

Sherpa Adventure Gear now employs hundreds of people in and around the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu. In May 2012 it set up its own charity, the Paldorje Education Fund, aimed at improving access to education for Sherpa children.
