European Outdoor Group joins ZDHC roadmap

Corporate social responsibility and sustainability were the main themes on the agenda at the summer meeting of the European Outdoor Group (EOG), attended by about 80 senior figures from leading outdoor brands.

Sustainability issues were discussed at length, and the association used the occasion to provide an update of work being done relating to chemicals. It has been working with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Group (ZDHC) on the issue of PFC use and now plans extend that cooperation. In addition, the EOG has now become an associate member of the ZDHC.

It will employ an expert who can bridge the gap between the outdoor industry and the scientific community hoping this will support the process of making significant changes in the supply chain, working closely with individual brand experts, the ZDHC and the chemicals industry.

The EOG also announced it has developed a relationship with the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF). Secretary general Mark Held has joined the board of FWF and Ivo Spauwen, the NGO’s verification coordinator, gave a presentation about the living wage. The EOG has provided financial support for an FWF study on the living wage in the outdoor industry, the results of which will be ready for members in the autumn, with a summary available for the wider public.

David Udberg, president of the EOG, said: “It was pleasing to see such a large turnout for the meeting. The event was a great showcase of how cooperation on non-competitive issues can be healthy and effective for our maturing industry."
