Chitosan maker adapts process to sportswear

Chitosan maker Shin-Era Tech has revamped its antibacterial product offering by blending it with cotton or polyester to produce quick-drying fabrics suitable for sports and underwear.

The Taiwanese company has been manufacturing chitosan – a product made from shrimp shells – for more than 15 years and incorporates chitosan nanoparticles into materials such as rayon.

The nanoparticles are distributed homogeneously inside the pores and on the surface of the fibre, so the antibacterial effect remains after numerous washing cycles.

Its Setosan product carries positive charges because chitosan has amino groups (NH3 +). The positive charges interact electrically with the adsorbed bacteria on the surface or within the pores of the fibre, inducing uneven charge distribution in bacteria and cutting off their DNA reproduction capability to achieve antibacterial results.
