As a corporate backer of extreme sailing races the America's Cup the Volvo Ocean Race, Puma expects its investment in gear for extreme sailing conditions will be beneficial for other sports.

"Because sailing gear is very technical, Puma learned a vast amount about working with new materials and sourcing new factory options. Benefits are long term because this knowledge can transfer to other categories within the company," said a spokesman for Puma.

Sailing helped the German group define its in-house CELL system used to describe different functions of its performance products; "drycell" helps keep wearers dry, while "visicell" is a product with high visibility.

The 34th America's Cup is under way in San Francisco.
