Trevira produces technical fibre using Genomatica BDO

Germany-based polyester manufacturer Trevira has opted to use bio-based BDO (1.4-butanediol) produced by sustainable chemicals specialist Genomatica to produce a non-woven technical textile fibre that will be used in protective clothing.

The BDO made using US-based Genomatica's bio-based technology is said to deliver purity and performance equivalent to that of fossil-based BDO.

Other companies using the product include Lanxess, DSM and Toray.

"These materials are the latest examples of the application usability of bio-based BDO made with Genomatica's commercial process technology," said Christophe Schilling, CEO of Genomatica.

“We believe that licensees of our technology will find ever-increasing application demand for the renewable and proven version of BDO that they are bringing to the market."
