BASF to build renewable-BDO plant with Genomatica know-how

Chemicals companies BASF and Genomatica have expanded their agreement for the production of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) based on renewable feedstocks.

BASF will build a world-scale production facility that will use the Genomatica process to manufacture renewable BDO with a single-step fermentation, based on dextrose or sucrose.

BASF has secured rights to allow production of up to 75,000 tons per year and has extended its agreement to South east Asia.

"We are happy to expand our license agreement with Genomatica to the dynamic Asia-Pacific region," said Stefan Blank, president of BASF's Intermediates division.

BDO is used as a raw material for sportswear and footwear.
