Textile innovation is one of two industrial areas that are likely to benefit from a new research alliance that will focus on biopolymers. The other is medical applications.

Specialty viscose fibres manufacturer Kelheim Fibres, technical textile producer Rökona and textile-focused research body the Hohenstein Institute are three of the four partners involved in the new alliance. The other is a biotechnology company, BRAIN. All are based in Germany.

The aim of the alliance is to establish “a sustainable microbial bioprocess” for the production of specialised components from plants such as seaweed.
