Timberland wants at least 60 new stores per year in China

Timberland’s managing director for Asia Pacific, Stewart Whitney, has said the brand, now owned by VF Corporation, plans to open between 60 and 70 new stores per year in China.

In recent comments to the South China Morning Post, Mr Whitney said most new Timberland stores in the region would be in tier-three cities, although he said there was still “plenty of opportunity” in tiers one and two.

“It is easy to just open lots of stores indiscriminately,” Mr Whitney told the Hong Kong-based newspaper. “That’s the challenge in China: balance the tremendous growth potential by distribution, and grow and develop a brand presence. Those two aren’t always aligned.”
