Fjällräven founder dies

The founder of Swedish outdoor brand Fjällräven, Åke Nordin, has died.

Åke Nordin founded Fjällräven in 1960, but had been developing his own ideas for outdoor products such as backpack frames since his early teenage years. Indeed, a backpack frame in aluminium, which he called “the material of the future”, was one of the first products the brand brought to market.

In the course of the 1960s, Fjällräven added condensation-free tents and its first outdoor garment, the Greenland Jacket, to its offering. A law introducing four weeks of statutory holiday and a series of outdoor promotional campaigns led to higher numbers of Swedes visiting the countryside, opening up possibilities for companies such as Fjällräven and the brand grew from there.

Mr Nordin had already stepped down from the company’s board. He was 77.
