Large textile firms sign up to new cotton programme

Thirty textile companies, suppliers to some of the world's largest apparel brands, have signed up to the new Cotton LEADS initiative and will now include it within their sustainable sourcing guidelines.

Launched two months ago by Cotton Australia and Cotton Incorporated, the programme is designed to raise awareness of the responsible growing practices and commitment to continuous improvement among cotton producers. Australia and the US account for roughly 17% of global cotton production.

Berrye Worsham, president and CEO of Cotton Incorporated, said "Apparel brands, retailers and manufacturers require large volumes and a reliable supply of responsibly-produced fibre, as well as proof of responsible production.”

She said its goals run “in parallel” with similar certification programs that have emerged in recent years.

Texile companies that have now recognised the standard include Fruit of the Loom, Central Textiles, Tuscarora Yarns and Mount Vernon Mills in the US; Hermann Buhler in Switzerland and Huafang and the Esquel Group in China.
