Anniversary collection takes Reef back to Brazil

The centrepiece of the anniversary collection is a relaunch of the first sandal Reef created, the smoothy. Brothers Fernando and Santino Aguerre, originally from Argentina, created the brand so that they could make a living while indulging their passion for surfing. They began producing the first Smoothy sandals with a manufacturing partner in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1984. The spring 2014 version will feature a logo that says ‘Reef Brazil Authentic Surf Sandals’.
Other components of the capsule collection will be new versions of the Reef Leather Smoothy, and of the women’s Ginger sandal. Reef says that, for years, women bought the men’s Smoothy before the line was specifically altered for women in 1999. The Ginger is a slender version with feminine colours on the strap, an EVA outsole, anatomical arch support and soft nylon webbing.
A T-shirt and two boardshorts in “washed-out 1980s colourways” and a Reef retro logo are also included.
