Peru fashion night in NYC to highlight alpaca
20/02/2014
Alpaca fibre extracted first from shearing the animal is known as the ‘flagship product of Peru’ and is strong, soft and exceptionally insulating.
Alpaca breeders, processors and spinners use techniques inherited from the pre-Columbian Tanticamayoc and dyers of ancient Peru, using dyes from leaves, seeds, stems, fruits and the cochinilla, an insect originating in Peru, producing a sustainable and ecological colouring.
Fashion houses including Chanel, Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dior have used suri alpaca and huacaya Peruvian fibre in their collections.
The event will be hosted by Biz USA, Peru & Americas, and the Peruvian government, through the Commercial Office of Peru in New York, PROMPERÚ.
See WSA January/February 2014 for an indepth look at alpaca and ‘new’ wools.
