Paka claims alpaca fleece outperforms for warmth
Outdoor brand Paka has unveiled an alpaca fibre-based fleece called Pakacloud, which it claims can outperform standard synthetic fleece in warmth-to-weight ratio.

The alpaca wool features hollow medullated air pockets, which reduce heat transfer and create an insulating buffer. The wool also boasts exceptional moisture management, antibacterial and thermoregulating characteristics, it said.

“What’s crazy to me is that the word ‘fleece’ means the wooly covering of an animal,” Kris Cody, Paka founder and CEO, said. “Yet 95% of fleeces currently made are from oil - polyester, acrylic and nylon.”

Each pullover features a handwoven Inca ID crafted by women artisans employed at four times the living wage in Peru, and cordlock system at the hem featuring pullers made from corn byproduct.

Founded in 2017, Paka started as a vision to bring the alpaca fibre to the outdoor industry, supporting an industry in Peru where 90% of products are made. It is a Certified B Corp and employs more than 200 weavers. It donates 1% of its revenue to Peruvian Hearts, an NGO dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women in Peru.
