Research project to optimise alpaca fibres
15/08/2024
The research project was launched last June and will continue until next March in the districts of Melgar and Ñuñoa, located in the province of Melgar, Puno, at altitudes below 4,000 meters above sea level. MGI Tech is focusing on gene sequencing. Inca Tops, a Group Inca company, is overseeing alpaca sample collection at its Pacomarca Scientific Station. For the past 20 years, this research lab has been collecting genetic data on alpacas and its ranch has some 2000 selected alpacas of different types and colours.
“Peru boasts over 85% of the world’s alpacas, totalling 5 million, establishing us as the primary producer of this sought-after fibre. While facing competition from other textiles in the market, technological advancements aim to enhance alpaca quality, boosting demand, industry value, and supporting highland farming communities,” said Dr Gustavo Gutiérrez, a professor and researcher at UNALM’s Department of Zootechnics, who is overseeing the DNA extraction from the camelids.
According to a Peruvian government report, the country’s alpaca exports, including fabrics for apparel and home furnishings and garments, are worth nearly USD 200 million yearly.
