Small Portuguese shoe firm gets CR7 boost

Cristiano Ronaldo cuts a dash wherever he goes, but the Real Madrid and Portuguese national team striker sparked a wide-ranging footwear conversation after a trip to a basketball game at the end of March.

Although he is a valued partner for many multinational brands, including Coca-Cola, Nike, KFC, Emporio Armani and Motorola, the footballer turned heads at the basketball court thanks to some shoes from small Portuguese company Armando Silva.

Made in the town of São João da Madeira in northern Portugal, the shoes are red high-top sneakers with the name ‘Ronaldo’ and his famous shirt number, seven, displayed on the tongue.

They are part of a line called 4 Play Sneakers that Armando Silva began to develop about five years ago in partnership with former Celtic, Benfica and the Netherlands striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk. Other current players to have personalised versions are Didier Drogba, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben.
