Fair Wear Foundation says brands must give back

Amsterdam-based non-profit organisation, Fair Wear Foundation (FWF), which works with companies and factories to improve labour conditions for garment workers around the world, is to host its annual conference in the Dutch city on May 23.

Among the questions the organisation intends to raise at the event is one about the effect on workers in clothing factories in China of putting in extra hours to enable their employers to meet the demands of clothing brands in Europe and North America.

Director, Erica van Doorn, said in the build-up to the conference: “If companies that produce in China want to keep their workers from working themselves ragged, they’ll also have to take a close look at their procurement practices. Is their production schedule perhaps too ambitious? Might they be encouraging overtime?”

She also said brands are coming under increasing pressure to make sure they are giving back to the countries in which they source product. “If companies want to profit from lower wage levels in Bangladesh or Myanmar, they must be prepared to invest, to contribute to that country’s development,” she said.
