More certainty for Myanmar after minimum wage agreed

Partly driven by pressure from retailer H&M, Myanmar has set a minimum wage of $2.80 for an eight-hour work day.

The move is expected to give some certainty to brands wishing to investing in apparel making in the country, after two years of debate between factory owners and unions.

Myanmar's minimum monthly pay would be around $67 a month, based on a six-day work week. In Vietnam and Cambodia the monthly minimum wage ranges from $90 to $128, according to the International Labour Organsation. The World Bank estimates Myanmar’s economy will grow 8% this year.

H&M works with 13 factories in Myanmar, while US retailer Gap sources from two.
