Gap to source clothes from Myanmar

10/06/2014
Apparel brand Gap has become the first major US clothing company to commit to Myanmar as a source of its products since sanctions against the Asian country were lifted in 2012.

It has announced a sourcing deal with South Korean-owned factories in the country, producing outerwear for its Old Navy and Banana Republic stores.

Myanmar’s apparel industry employed around 300,000 people in the early part of this century but was hit hard when a trade embargo came in in 2003.

Gap has said it expects the contracts it has signed with South Korean outsource manufacturing partners in Myanmar to create around 700 jobs there.
