Sportswear sales robust for Belle

Belle International, China’s largest footwear retailer and a distributor of Nike and adidas, has said it is relying on sportswear sales to lift profits after reporting only a 1% rise in 2013.

Sales in its sportswear division rose 6% while footwear increased 0.5%, which its CEO Sheng Baijiao blamed on a sluggish economy.

"The macroeconomic outlook for the next two years is not optimistic," he said. "The consumer retail market is expected to be under continued pressure due to weak consumer sentiment."

Sportswear sales accounted for about 40% of revenue.

Belle operates nearly 20,000 stores across mainland China.
