Anti-corruption commission names 17 people in connection with Rana Plaza

An anti-corruption commission in Bangladesh has formally accused 17 people of breaching regulations during the construction of the clothing factory in the Rana Plaza complex near Dhaka, which collapsed in April 2013, resulting in the deaths of more than 1,100 garment workers.

Those named include factory owners, local politicians, engineers and the parents of Mohammad Sohel Rana. Reuters has explained that Mr Rana was arrested four days after the disaster, apparently trying to flee to India. However, his name does not appear on the official documentation relating to the site, which, instead, cites his parents as the owners.

The commission will now appoint an official to conduct a further investigation that may lead to court proceedings.
