French brand Auchan has recently committed $1.5 million to the International Labour Organisation-backed compensation fund, bringing the total to just under $20 million.
Organisers estimate $40 million is needed to ensure all the survivors and families receive fair compensation.
Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) says 2,849 claims were received from 5,099 injured persons and dependents of the deceased and missing workers.
The first 1,587 beneficiaries have received an instalment, 40% of the calculated compensation each is owed. The money for the remaining beneficiaries is expected to be approved in the coming few weeks.
“CCC is pleased that the first batch of awards have been approved and paid through a transparent and independently overseen process, according to international standards. We are however dismayed that the industry has failed to pay up sufficiently for the full awards to be deposited in the bank accounts,” said Ineke Zeldenrust, spokeswoman for the Clean Clothes Campaign.
