Q1 Asia factory inspections rise 156%

As the anniversary of the Rana Plaza apparel factory collapse approaches, audit company AsiaInspection has reported a 156% year-on-year increase in ethical and manufacturing audits in Asia for the first quarter of the year.

The disaster in Bangladesh, which killed more than 1,000 workers, highlighted how factories often illegally sub-contract orders after major retailers reported that their products were not authorised to be manufactured there.

“There’s notable traction taking hold in supply chains worldwide: corporations putting their money where their mouths are and governments moving forward on legislation,” said Sebastien Breteau, CEO of AsiaInspection.

The American Chamber of Commerce surveyed 400 companies sourcing from China and found that 40% have plans to spend significantly more on ethical compliance.
