The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, the group of 26 North American apparel retailers and brands that joined together in July to develop and launch a new safety initiative for workers in the wake of the Rana Plaza fire in April, has officially opened its office in Dhaka, the Asian country’s capital.

Companies that have joined the initiative have signed up to a binding, five-year undertaking that will be “transparent, results-oriented, measurable and verifiable with the intent of improving safety in Bangladeshi ready-made garment factories”.

“It is an honour to formalise our presence in Dhaka, which will help speed the achievement of our ambitious goals for garment factory safety,” said Jeffrey Krilla, president of the Alliance. “We are proud of the progress the Alliance has set in motion to improve conditions for workers in factories. We are committed to working alongside our Bangladesh allies to ensure a new standard for safety in the garment industry.”
