China and South Korea on ITUC list of six worst countries in the world for workers

Brussels-based workers’ rights organisation the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has released details of the “worst countries in the world” for labour rights in a new report. It used 97 different metrics to rank countries, including wages, working conditions, and collective bargaining rights.

It listed China and South Korea among the six worst countries for workers. The Central African Republic, Syria, Belarus and Cambodia complete the list.

Of China, the ITUC report said: “Working conditions are still abysmal in many industries, with an average of 200 workers killed on the job each day. Up to 6 million workers across the country are plagued by respiratory illnesses often caused by exposure to dust, which builds up in the lungs.”

Acknowledging that the inclusion of South Korea would come as a surprise, the report centred its justification of the country’s appearance on the list on practices at one of the biggest and best known corporations in South Korea, where, it alleged, conditions are harsh and trade unions discouraged.
