Fibre manufacturers raise concerns over proposed PTA duty hike

01/07/2014
Proposed anti-dumping duties on imports into India of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) from manufacturers in China, South Korea, Thailand and the European Union have drawn protests from the country’s PTA Users’ Association.

Indian manufacturers MCC PTA India and Reliance Industries Limited are named as applicants in the documentation the government has put together, but the PTA Users’ Association has now complained that the only people to benefit from anti-dumping would be textile firms who have integrated their PTA production into their operations.

At the same time, the association has said, 20,000 small and medium-scale polyester fibre and product manufacturers across India will suffer because of hikes in price of up to 20%, depending on the source of imported PTA. Consumers will also be affected, too, it said, because of higher finished product prices.
