Paraguay: lowest cotton crop in 50 years

09/07/2014
Paraguay’s cotton crop is the lowest it has been in 50 years, producing under 15 million tonnes of cotton in the first six months of the 2014-15 season. This was nowhere near the 50 million tonnes or more of cotton Paraguay’s domestic market requires.

There is speculation that the decline in domestically grown cotton is because of low-quality seed, resulting in poor growth of the cotton plants. Other factors are that cotton growers are leaving the market owing to low prices for the crop.
