Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, has hailed as a great success her country’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which ended in Rio de Janeiro on July 14, with Germany beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

At a meeting on the following day, President Rousseff said: “What we have lived through during these weeks was a fantastic festiveal, with the people of Brazil, once again, showing our capacity for welcoming people. All lovers of football have, without doubt, taken part in one of the loveliest parties in the world.”

She said 846,600 people had come from outside Brazil to attend World Cup matches, either in stadiums around the country or at special Fan Fest events set up with giant screens in squares and even on beaches.
