Swift pay-back for Real Madrid in James Rodriguez shirt sales

One of the stars of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Colombia’s attacking midfielder James Rodríguez, was bound to attract interest from a string of the biggest clubs in the world following the tournament’s close so it was no surprise when he signed for Real Madrid on July 22.

Current European champions, Real Madrid, paid a fee reported to be €80 million for the player’s signature, but may have recovered more than half that amount in replica shirt sales within one week.

By July 26, sports marketing experts in Spain said Real Madrid had sold more than 415,000 shirts with the name ‘James’ on the back, with the new star’s squad number, 10. They said this had generated revenue for Real Madrid and for its shirt sponsor adidas of more than €41 million.
