Bayer MaterialScience and bluesign technologies have announced a new strategic alliance with the aim of advancing sustainability in the textile industry. The two companies will work together to promote safe production processes and working conditions along the entire value chain.

“Bayer MaterialScience has been supporting its customers for a long time now in achieving goals of both innovation and sustainability,” said Nicholas Smith, the head, globally, of the company’s textile coating business. As an example, he pointed to Insqin, a recently launched water-borne, solvent-free polyurethane package, which he said can help manufacturers cut energy consumption by 50% and water consumption by as much as 95%.

For his part, bluesign chief executive, Peter Waeber, said he welcomed the alliance because he believes Bayer MaterialScience is increasing the range of certified substances that customers in the textile industry can use “to achieve production operations that are compatible with both people and the environment”.

He also welcomed support from Bayer in establishing the bluesign system, which defines criteria for chemical use in textile production, as “a global standard for a sustainable textile industry”.
