Supermarket group makes hazardous chemicals commitment on clothes

German retail group Lidl has announced a commitment to eliminate all hazardous chemicals from its textile supply chain by 2020.

Most famous as a discount supermarket chain, reports said at the time of the announcement that Lidl turns over more than €1 billion per year in sales of textiles, footwear and clothing across its network of stores in 28 countries.

Under its commitment, Lidl will phase out alkylphenol ethoxylates by the end of June 2016 and all per- and polyfluorinated chemicals must be eliminated by July 2017.
