TenCate protective fabrics selected for firefighters in Dutch region of Twente

TenCate Protective Fabrics has received an order for advanced protective fabrics for firefighters’ uniforms in the Twente region of the Netherlands.

New uniforms will be made for the region’s firefighters by specialist clothing manufacturer LHD Group. The order is for 1,028 uniforms made using multiple protective fabrics including TenCate Millenia. Delivery will start in March 2015.

TenCate claims its Millenia product is “the strongest and lightest fabric available worldwide” that can provide the level of protection the Dutch firefighters require, partly due to the use of a fibre that is ten times stronger than steel wire but remains strong and supple, even after exposure to intense heat and flames.

The Twente decision follows extensive trials in which a uniform made by LHD Group using TenCate Millenia was judged by wearers to be the best.

Karin Klein Hesselink, end-use market manager at TenCate Protective Fabrics, said on announcing the new contract win: “Field tests are an essential part of the whole tendering process. Firefighters should be able to experience for themselves how comfortable and functional their professional equipment is and should have confidence in the uniform providing them optimal protection and support during hazardous operations.”

The thermal liner of the uniforms is based on TenCate CQ703 fabric, which the company says provides a high level of moisture regulation and remains smooth and flexible so that the uniform is comfortable and gives freedom of movement. TenCate also supplies materials for reinforced knee and elbow patches.
