RIL seeks to address India’s PTA deficit as polyester growth continues

India-based fibre and yarn manufacturer Reliance Industries (RIL) has successfully put into operation two new plants in Dahej, in the state of Gujarat.

One factory will produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin and will have a manufacturing capacity of 650,000 tonnes per annum. RIL has said this new factory will have one of the largest bottle-grade PET resin capacities of any single location globally.

The second facility will produce purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and will have a capacity of more than 1.1 million tonnes per annum. Another PTA plant with a similar capacity is under construction at the same location, which RIL says will put it among the top five PTA manufacturers globally.

RIL pointed out on making the announcement that, while India is the second-largest producer of polyester in the world, with estimated production of 5.4 million tonnes per annum and annual growth of between 8% and 10%, domestic capacity to produce PTA, a key compound for the production of polyester, is lacking.
