Adidas stands by football after dramatic FIFA arrests

Sports group adidas has said it remains fully committed to promoting “the highest standards of ethics and compliance” in sport ant that it expects the same from its partners. It made the statement to business media outlet CNBC on May 27 after action by Swiss justice officials on May 27 on behalf of the US authorities.

Officials arrested six people in Zurich as senior executives of football’s global governing body, FIFA, prepared to elect a new president of the organisation on May 29. The arrests were in relation to alleged fraud in the business of regional football associations in the Americas.

In the US, the department of justice said it was charging 14 defendants in all with racketeering, money laundering and other offences, in connection with their participation in “a 24-year scheme to enrich themselves through the corruption of international soccer”.

Adidas, one of FIFA’s main sponsors, said it encouraged the organisation to “follow transparent compliance standards” in everything it does. “Adidas is the world’s leading football brand and we will continue to support football on all levels,” it added.
