Start-ups specialising in wearable technology to help golfers use statistics to improve their game and in joint protectors for the personal protective equipment market were among the winners at the 2015 edition of funding competition Scottish Edge.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist, Sir Tom Hunter, who started his business life by selling athletic footwear from a van, is the principal backer of the competition and it was he who gave out the 2015 awards at a special ceremony in Edinburgh on June 12.

Shot Scope Technologies, which has developed wearable technology that automatically collects scoring and statistical data for golfers, won funding of £50,000 in this year’s competition. Based in Edinburgh, the start-up says its technology offers golfers of all levels of ability “a world of statistics previously only available to the very top professional golfers”.

For its part, Glasgow-based VH Innovation won funding of £65,000 to help it bring to market a series of products that protect the joints. The products use a patent-pending technology branded as Recoil Kneepads and the first one to go into production is a special knee-pad for the personal protective equipment market.
