Malaysia considers whether sportswear complies with Islamic ruling

A row has erupted in Malaysia about whether sportswear complies with Islamic rules after gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi received criticism for her clothing at the SEA Games in Singapore.

Local press have reported that the Cabinet member for Islamic Affairs, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, said the federal government will carry out an in-depth study on Islamic compliance of sportswear.

However, youth and sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin has reportedly commented on Twitter, “Athletes should wear whatever they feel comfortable in, as long as it adheres to federation regulations.

“Scrutiny and attacks on Farah Ann have been uncalled for. She’s old enough to make own decisions. Leave our athletes alone.”
