Textile and garment exports from Malaysia increased 10% in the first half of 2016 to RM 6.99 billion ($1.72 billion). This was compared to RM 6.33 billion ($1.58 billion) in the same period of last year.

The figures were quoted to local media by Datuk Ahmad Maslan, Malaysia’s deputy international trade and industry minister. He said the increase was driven be increased purchasing power from major export destinations like the US, the European Union (EU) and Canada.

Mr Maslan said there were 970 textile and garment units registered in the country. Of these, over 400 produce apparel, 80 yarn and 109 knitting fabrics. He said other textile fabrics in Malaysia manufacture woven fabrics and garment accessories such as zippers and labels.
