President Obama to press ahead with TPP

17/08/2016
The administration of US President Barack Obama has released a draft statement of administrative action regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in an effort to begin ratifying the agreement before the end of his second presidential term.

The statement outlines the steps the administration will take to implement TPP. Under the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation that was passed in 2015, it can now send draft legislation to implement TPP to Congress within 30 days.

Although this is unlikely to happen until President Obama is confident of having enough votes to pass the agreement in Congress, it indicates that he is intent of passing TPP before he leaves the White House.

The TPP agreement would cover 40% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). It proposes free trade among among Australia, Brunei, Chile, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam.
