Patagonia says it’s “unequivocally opposed” to TPP

Outdoor brand Patagonia has repeated its long-standing concerns about the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), saying in mid-December that, following the publication “at last” of the full text of the proposed free trade agreement, its opposition is unequivocal.

Twelve countries reached agreement on TPP in October 2015 and governments have said they expect ratification in the course of 2016 and 2017.

“We oppose it, as it advances the interests of big business at the expense of the environment, workers, consumers, communities and small businesses,” Patagonia said. “This confirms our previous fears about the agreement’s serious social and environmental costs. We must ask, who benefits? Does it serve the many or only those who have the economic and political muscle to get their interests written, opaquely and without public oversight, into law?”
