Asian nations meet to discuss alternative to TPP

01/03/2017
The first meeting of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) since the US withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free-trade agreement got underway in Kobe, Tokyo on February 27.

RCEP is made up of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which includes Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam, as well as Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

The week-long meeting is seen as the first opportunity to discuss alternative trade agreements ahead of the likely collapse of TPP. The participating countries broadly agree on two areas, economic and technological cooperation, according to Japanese media reports. This would see advanced countries provide assistance to emerging economies.

The parties are expected to touch on a number of other issues before the meeting concludes on March 3, with common rules on investment and e-commerce, and the elimination or reduction of trade tariffs on the agenda.
