New Zealand’s parliament passes act approving ‘dead-in-the-water’ TPP

In spite of widespread reports that the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal is dead in the water, New Zealand’s parliament passed an act on its implementation on November 15.

This followed an announcement in the US immediately following the election victory on November 8 of Donald Trump, a vocal opponent of TPP during the campaign, that the trade deal will not receive approval from the US Congress in the weeks that remain of Barack Obama’s presidency.

“This legislation says clearly to the world that New Zealand is open for business and ready and capable of completing high-quality, comprehensive and ambitious trade agreements,” said Malcom Bailey, chairman of the New Zealand International Business Forum (NZIBF), after his country’s parliament passed the act.

He added: “At a time when the future of global trade is uncertain at best, New Zealand cannot turn aside from the important effort to seek better rules for trade and investment. New Zealand has been built on trade and open global markets benefit business, workers, their families and communities.”
