The seventh ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Traditional Textile Symposium and Expo runs this week in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. The five-day biennial event, themed “Embracing Change, Honoring Tradition”, aims to introduce traditional textiles from the regional grouping member states.

Organisers have said the event can improve attendees’ knowledge about ASEAN traditional textiles in terms of motifs, materials and creation techniques.

More than 300 participants are expected from Southeast Asian countries as well as the US, Australia, Canada, India, South Korea, Russia, New Zealand, China and the EU.

A number of international speakers are set to present research papers on traditional textiles during the symposium, including Weaving in ASEAN: Shared Histories, Common Themes by Christopher Buckley of the University of Oxford; Safe-guarding Indonesian Traditional Textiles by Jadin Jamaludin of Indonesia; and Talismanic Seeing, Figurative Imagery and Islam in the Batik of Java by James Bennett of Australia.

A show presenting Indonesian designer Lia Mustafa is planned for Thursday, and participants are invited to attend trips to a number of Yogyakarta’s cultural sites, textile production centers and galleries.
