Footwear and apparel companies call for TPP vote

More than 100 footwear, apparel and travel goods companies have signed a letter sent to the US Congress urging a vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement by the end of the year.

Among those to sign the letter were adidas, Colombia, Coach, Skechers, Stuart Weitzman and Timberland.

The letter described TPP as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reduce costs and open new markets for US brands and retailers”. It added that the agreement would remove more than $2.8 billion of duties on US imports of footwear, apparel and travel goods.

“The TPP will help our companies and brands successfully compete at home and in TPP countries, and bring real benefits by reducing costs and returning greater value to our customers," the letter emphasised.

The agreement would make 85% of all footwear products entering the US immediately duty-free, according to the US Commerce Department.
