TPP on the minds of those at Taiwan fair

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement, of which Taiwan is not a part, was a hot topic of discussion on the opening day of the Taipei Innovative Textile Application Show (Titas), which runs from October 17 to 19.

As well as being referred to by Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-Wen, in her address at the opening press conference, TPP was also a point of interest for several of the exhibitors participating at the show.

Taiwan-based Sheico Group, which is presenting a variety of products including its neoprene wetsuits at the event, has recently opened a vertically integrated manufacturing unit in Vietnam, which is a TPP country, in preparation for the agreement being ratified. Sheico representative Oliver Lin told sportstextiles.com that Taiwan risks being left behind if it doesn’t become part of the agreement.

Speaking to a select group of media organisations, Justin Huang, secretary general of the Taiwan Textile Federation, urged the government to do all it can to secure Taiwan’s integration into TPP before it is ratified. He added that Taiwanese companies are having to innovate more quickly than their direct competitors in order to compensate for the country’s exclusion from free trade agreements (FTA).
