Hong Kong firm shows off self-cleaning fabric

Hong Kong textile technology developer Chaoda Industrial presented its Evershield fabric protection product at Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics in mid-October.

Chaoda describes EverShield as “durable and omni-repellent (DOR)” and claims that fabric treated with it is “the world’s first self-cleaning fabric”.

General manager, Tony Kam, told sportstextiles at the exhibition that EverShield is based on the ‘lotus effect’, in which moisture beads up and runs off, carrying dirt with it to leave the fabric clean, as happens with the lotus flower.

He explained that EverShield works by establishing a C6-based polymer coating that encases each fibre in the material a garment is made from. Use of cross-linker technology makes the effect more durable. Depending on garment construction and other factors, Mr Kam said the DOR effect of EverShield can continue to work well after 30 washes.

Sports and outdoor apparel are among the applications that Chaoda wants to target for the product.
