Golf in the rough in China after government ban
23/10/2015
The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee has published new rules on “clean governance”, which include a ban on playing golf for all 88 million party members.
This has led to high-level business figures in China reviewing their desire to join clubs and spend time on the golf course, various news outlets have reported. People in business became interested in golf as a way of spending time with government officials, to share ideas and help shape government initiatives. If government representatives are banned from playing, business people will find it harder to justify the time away from the office, reports have said.
Reuters quoted one golf equipment and clothing supplier in Shanghai as saying sales have fallen by 30% in the last year. The present government, which came to power in 2013, has run a widespread campaign against corruption and displays of luxury.
