Luxury brand to build new weaving facility in Leeds

04/11/2015
Luxury brand Burberry has announced plans to develop a new manufacturing and weaving facility in Leeds. The proposal represents an initial investment of over £50m in the heart of Yorkshire, the company said, and is expected to provide permanent employment for more than 1,000 people. Work on the new site is due to begin in 2016 with a current completion date of 2019.

The proposed site will allow Burberry to continue to produce what it calls its most iconic product, the heritage trench coat, in Yorkshire where the brand has been manufacturing for over half a century. The company will have the potential to develop and make other products at the site.

Yorkshire has a proud weaving and garment-making tradition, but has lost many of its textile industry jobs to lower-cost economies in recent decades.
