Italian company develops machines for Insqin and becomes Covestro partner

Italian textile machine manufacturer Isotex has announced a new joint-programme with Covestro. They will work together to develop and market technologies for PU-coated synthetic materials based on the Insqin technology and services model that Covestro (then named Bayer MaterialScience) launched in 2014.

Insqin materials are produced without solvents and consume fewer resources than standard PU-coated materials, Covestro has said, and the model is based on waterborne technology. The company said recently that 99% of PU-coated materials are being made at the moment using dimethylformamide (DMF) as the process solvent and warned that DMF has been called a substance of very high concern in the European Union and is on the radar of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Group.

It is in this context that Isotex and Covestro will now jointly promote more sustainable solutions for PU coated fabrics, addressing the requirements from a wide range of industries including sportswear and fashion.

As part of the new joint-programme, Isotex will design a new line of machines for use with Insqin. Stefano Gallucci, chief executive of Isotex and of its parent company, Santex Group, said at the time of the announcement: “We believe waterborne products are the future. Technology and chemistry are ready after years of research and development efforts.”

For his part, Nick Smith, global head of textile coatings at Covestro, said of the new development: “Continuous innovation in textile machine technology is just as important for the industry as innovation in chemistry. For this reason we are delighted to collaborate with Isotex.”
