Zimbabwean government aims to revive cotton farming

The Zimbabwean government has said it wants to revive the country’s cotton industry. Cotton production there yielded more than 350,000 tonnes when the industry was at its peak at the start of the century; this has since fallen to just over 100,000 tonnes per year.

In a new budget statement at the end of November, finance and economic development minister, Patrick Chinamasa, said that the government recognised the importance of reviving cotton farming. He said the government would work to encourage existing cotton farmers to continue producing the crop and for producers who have left cotton farming to consider returning.

Government measures will include direct support for cotton farming groups in the form of the state buying equity in farming groups, as well as investing in the marketing of Zimbabwean cotton.
