Berghaus partners with Gore to bring kinder dyeing to waterproofs
Outdoor brand Berghaus has announced that it will use its proprietary Colourkind fabric dyeing technology to dye waterproofs, working in partnership with breathable water-resistant membrane technology provider Gore-Tex.

Colourkind, part of a wider programme that Berghaus has called Madekind, is a fabric-dyeing technology that can offer reductions of 89% in water usage, of 63% in chemical usage and of 60% in carbon emissions, in comparison to conventional methods, the outdoor brand has claimed. Berghaus’s method is based on adding colour to nylon chips before they are extruded into fibres; it says this also results in higher-quality fabrics and improved colour-fastness.

It has worked closely with Gore-Tex to use Colourkind to make waterproof fabrics that are kinder to the environment, combining WL Gore’s 2L Gore-Tex membrane with a 40-denier ripstop nylon Colourkind face. These fabrics feature in Berghaus’s Island Peak collection of men’s and women’s all season walking jackets and pants for autumn-winter 2016-2017.

Each product in the Island Peak collection is designed for year-round walking in all weathers and is constructed to Gore’s Extreme Wet Weather standard. As well as the new Colourkind face fabric, Island Peak jackets use recycled fibres on the inside and, in some cases, recycled fleece.
